A False Sense of Security: The Cybersecurity Gap in Video Surveillance

A Wake-Up Call from Hanwha Vision Europe

Security Managers and Directors know that cyber-attacks are growing in sophistication and frequency – they understand the importance of securing video surveillance systems cannot be overstated. However, research from Hanwha Vision Europe has unveiled a troubling disparity between users’ confidence in their cybersecurity measures and the reality of their practices.

A recent survey of over 1,000 IT and security managers across Europe highlights a concerning trend: nearly 90% of UK respondents claim their CCTV systems, are either protected or highly protected from cyber-attacks, however research reveals widespread neglect of basic cybersecurity measures:

  • Failure to change default usernames and passwords: Only 34% of respondents have updated their camera credentials.
  • Outdated firmware: A mere 12% ensure their devices are running the latest firmware.
  • Inadequate device access security: Only 6% have secured access to Networked Digital Recorders (NDRs) and other devices.

Alarming Lack of Awareness

The study also uncovered a significant knowledge gap regarding key cybersecurity regulations. Only 29% of respondents are aware of the second Network and Information Security Directive (NIS 2), and just 41% are familiar with the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA). Both regulations, which came into effect in October 2024, have substantial implications for UK organisations, particularly those with operations in the EU.

Insufficient Promotion of Best Practices

Organisations’ efforts to promote cybersecurity best practices are falling short. While 46% of UK organisations encourage the use of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), only 14% actively promote the adoption of strong passwords. This lack of emphasis on foundational security practices leaves video networks vulnerable to exploitation.

Industry Response

John Lutz Boorman, Head of Product and Marketing at Hanwha Vision Europe, has called for urgent action. He described the findings as a “wake-up call” for users and the security industry alike.

“With the number of cyber-attacks on the rise, and the cost and impact of these security breaches growing all the time, organisations must match words with actions to boost their video network resilience,” Boorman stated. “Like any IoT device, an unsecured video camera can present a tempting route into an organisation’s network for bad actors – but even simple measures can help close off this path.”

A Shared Responsibility

The research highlights that the failure to follow best practices is not limited to any specific sector. Even high-risk industries, such as financial services, where the stakes are particularly high, are guilty of neglecting cybersecurity fundamentals.

Boorman emphasised the shared responsibility of users, manufacturers, and installers in bolstering system resilience. “While it is the user’s responsibility to keep their networks secure, it is clearly in the interest of manufacturers and installers to help them maintain system resilience. The wider security industry must do more to help,” he said.

Moving Forward

The findings from Hanwha Vision Europe underline the urgent need for organisations to bridge the gap between perception and reality in their cybersecurity measures. By prioritising actions such as changing default passwords, updating firmware, and promoting robust security practices, organisations can significantly reduce their vulnerability to cyber-attacks.

This research serves as a stark reminder that cybersecurity is an ongoing process, requiring vigilance, education, and collaboration across all levels of the security ecosystem. It’s time to turn awareness into action and ensure that video surveillance systems are not the weakest link in organisational security.
