Stopping Port Scanning Before It Becomes a Problem

  • i-spi now detects and blocks port scanning activity at the datacentre level, automatically preventing suspicious IPs from accessing your environment for 24 hours.

  • This stops opportunistic threats at the earliest stage, without impacting customer bandwidth, data usage, or on-site performance.

  • Fully visible in the Netcelero portal, it adds a behavioural security layer on top of geo-fencing for smarter, proactive protection.

A New Data Centre-Level Security Layer for i-spi

In connected environments, opportunistic scanning is constant. Automated bots and bad actors continuously probe public-facing IPs looking for open ports, weak services, or anything that offers a foothold.

The reality is simple: most attacks don’t start with sophistication, they start with indiscriminate port scanning.

That’s why Netcelero have introduced a new security layer within our i-spi infrastructure, designed to stop this activity before it ever reaches your site.

What’s New?

We now actively monitor for port scanning behaviour at the data centre level across the i-spi platform. When scanning is detected:

  • The source IP is automatically blocked for 24 hours
  • The block is applied centrally within our infrastructure
  • The activity is logged and visible in the Netcelero portal

This creates a proactive barrier against reconnaissance activity, which is the very first stage of most cyber threats.

What This Means in Practice

From the customer portal example above, you can clearly see:

  • IPs that have been identified as scanning
  • Their geographic origin
  • How long they remain blocked
  • Associated hostnames (where available)

This provides both visibility and assurance – you know what’s being stopped, and that it’s being handled automatically.

Why This Matters

Most security conversations focus on protection after access is gained. This feature shifts that thinking upstream.

1. It stops noise at the edge
Automated scanning traffic is filtered before it can interact with your environment.

2. It reduces attack surface exposure
By blocking aggressive probing early, it prevents escalation attempts.

3. It operates independently of the site connection
Because enforcement sits within our core infrastructure, it has zero impact on customer bandwidth, which is particularly relevant with 4G/5G or Starlink connected sites. It also has no impact on the on-site network performance

4. It complements geo-fencing
Geo-blocking limits where traffic can come from.
This feature focuses on how traffic behaves, adding a behavioural security layer.

Built for Real-World Deployments

Many of our customers operate in environments where:

  • Connectivity is delivered over 4G/5G or Starlink
  • Networks sit outside traditional IT control
  • Devices must remain remotely accessible at all times, but secure

In these scenarios, you can’t rely on on-site firewalls or constant manual oversight.

This is why security must be centralised, automated and non-intrusive. This new capability delivers exactly that.

A Smarter Approach to Secure Connectivity

At Netcelero, our focus has always been on simplifying secure access without adding operational burden. This enhancement is a natural extension of that approach:

  • No configuration required
  • No hardware changes
  • No impact on existing deployments

Just continuous, intelligent protection running in the background.

In Summary

Port scanning is inevitable, however exposure isn’t.

With automated detection and 24-hour blocking at the data centre level, the i-spi now provides an additional layer of defence that:

  • Stops opportunistic threats early
  • Protects without consuming customer resources
  • Gives full visibility through the portal
